Japanese Hair Magazine

Spring 2008 Edition... Cawaii Hair Magazine:

Following up from my earlier post, I wanted to mention a new (to me) Hair Magazine (containing over 500 images) that I found online and had sent to me from a Japanese resource (ebay).

The photographs show a wide variety of styles from short to long and are young and fresh wearable styles. Another great feature of the magazine is a section that shows up to 4 views of each hair style.  Front view, left side, right side, and back view.  Also, there is a face shape guide to show what face shapes can best wear each cut.

Editions of this (Cawaii) magazine are published 4 times a year; Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter.

Desperately Seeking \\\"Hairlusions\\\" by Gary Gerard

When first I began in the hair styling field it was the early 80's and I vividly recall setting up my first 'station' or 'chair'.   In a stack of discarded hair books I discovered an illustrated book that I recall to be "Hairlusions" by Gary Gerard and it became one of my best 'tools' on hand.  The book was unusual because instead of photographs of models, it was entirely composed of quality (timeless) illustrations.  What's so nice is that with illustrations is easier not to get caught up with the exact texture, thickness or color of the models hair.  It's easier to just look at the shapes, angles and the like.  While I recall there were plenty of very 'dated' styles, it was still by far a treasure trove of hairstyles since we know that given time, old styles resurface again with just a few twists and voila! Instant update!  Classics or takes on classic shapes will always find their way back in vogue.

When I left that salon 4 years later, well, suffice it to say I regret not asking the owner if I could save this book from extinction and keep it my possession. However, I still have hope to find a copy of that particular book.  Gary Gerard is still educating and traveling doing the hair show circuits but his hair style books are long out of print.  I did gather some helpful information and names to other books created by Mr. Gerard.  They include "Hair Power" , "Hair Explosion" and "Designs in Hair" as well as "Hairlusions".  Hopefully, I'll eventually find a copy of this book I've long coveted.   Maybe someone has some information?

Finally!  I've been tinkering with just what this new website would become.  I am a freelance/ self-employed hair stylist and work out of a beautiful salon in a fantastic location where I've happily resided for a total of 18 years.  That is forever in "Salon Years".  I am so Blessed!
